"My name is Jina Imani and I am a Queer Black artist, a Southern California native now living in the Inland Empire.
My intentional journey to self discovery led me to my voice that once was buried for protection so many years ago. I came from a family who’s foundation of survival was violence. Physical and emotional abuse rained down almost daily. Growing up I did not have the space for creativity in the sense of making art. I used my creativity for survival.
Living with C-PTSD (complex post traumatic stress disorder) I learned to use meditation and daily mindfulness practices to heal and bring peace to my mental landscape. I started more creative writing and wrote two Zines entitled “I Am Not An Artist, This Is My Art Vol. 1 & 2”. I created and authored a children’s book entitled, “My Mommy Says My Hair Is Like A Plant”. My artwork reflects the journey of sifting through the mind to gain knowledge and self acceptance. Exploring my own self identity through mixed media and photography I am able to reframe ideas that I once held true. The use of transparency film allows the on looker to see through me exploring the concept that everything is not as it seems and by reframing a concept we can gain mental clarity. I share my vulnerability with you as it is my strength."
